2016 American Academy of Oral Medicine (AAOM) Annual Meeting

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS: The AAOM invites individuals (students, residents/fellows, junior and senior investigators) to submit abstracts (original investigations or case reports) for the 2016 American Academy of Oral Medicine Annual Meeting. Relevant abstracts previously presented within the last 12 months at other conferences, and not yet published, are eligible for submission. The Abstracts Committee for this meeting will select abstracts for poster and oral presentations. Those accepted for oral presentation will be published in the Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology and Oral Radiology journal.
ALL ABSTRACTS MUST BE SUBMITTED ELECTRONICALLY THROUGH THE SECURE LINK AT THE AAOM WEBSITE (WWW.AAOM.COM) BY 11:59 PM PACIFIC STANDARD TIME ON DECEMBER 14st, 2015. ABSTRACTS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED FOR CONSIDERATION AFTER THIS TIME. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES WILL PRESENTERS BE PERMITTED TO MODIFY THEIR ABSTRACT TEXT AFTER THE SUBMISSION DEADLINE.
Decisions will be sent to corresponding authors via e-mail by February 1, 2016. If accepted, authors are required to register for the meeting and be present during the scheduled poster/oral sessions. Abstracts are accepted contingent that at least one of the authors register and present the abstract at the annual meeting. An abstract without a registered presenter by the registration deadline of will be withdrawn and will be ineligible for publication in Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology and Oral Radiology Journal.
INSTRUCTIONS
All abstracts are limited to a maximum of 300 words. Titles must be 10 words or less. Tables and figures are not allowed.
All submitted abstracts must be categorized as either "Original Investigation" or "Case Report." Case reports will be eligible for poster presentation only, with the exception of certain recipients of awards.
Original Investigation Abstract Format:
a) Objectives (aims/purpose, hypotheses, and goals of the investigation)
b) Methods (brief description of experimental procedures including statistics)
c) Results (findings of statistical analysis)
d) Conclusions (one or two major conclusions, underlined, that are supported by results)
Case Report Abstract Format:
a) Background (A few sentences providing information relevant to case)
b) Case summary (chief complaint, other pertinent historical and examination data, diagnostic investigations and results (laboratory, radiographic, etc.), and therapeutic or management strategies/outcomes)
c) Conclusions (significance/relevance of case)
AWARDS
Lester Burket Memorial Award
The Lester Burket Memorial Award (LBMA) was created to honor the memory of Dr. Lester Burket to promote basic and clinical research in oral medicine. Only residents/fellows of accredited US and Canadian Oral Medicine residency training programs are eligible, and the abstracts should represent significant thesis-level research. There are two $1,500 awards, one for basic science and the other for clinical research.
- Eligible residents must be enrolled in an accredited oral medicine residency program in the United States or Canada. There is a maximum of one entrant per program for each category, and each entrant must be nominated by the program director.
- Candidates must submit an expanded abstract (maximum of 750 words) of their original research project, and specify the category of research: Basic Science or Clinical Investigation. LBMA abstract format should include: (a) Objectives: introduction that clearly indicates the purpose of the study, hypotheses, and goals of the investigation, (b) Methods: a description of the experimental procedures including statistical methods where appropriate, (c) Results: findings of statistical analysis, (d) Conclusions: supported by results, and (e) Funding sources including grant numbers.
- In addition, candidates must supply the following via online submission: (1) statement of level of independence--a few sentences stating the candidate's and mentor's level of participation in the research project, 2) statement of timeline--explanation as to when the research was completed in relation to the Oral Medicine program and (3) publication history--list all submitted manuscripts and publications that have resulted from this research project. Award recipients will be notified by February 1, 2016. Awardees will give a 20 minute oral presentation, followed by a 5-minute question and answer session at the AAOM meeting. Winners in both LBMA categories will receive $1,500, a one-year membership in the AAOM, and the meeting registration fee will be waived for recipients.
Robert and Kay Schattner Award
A student, resident or fellow at the meeting will be eligible for The Robert and Kay Schattner Award for the best presentation of an original investigation abstract. Judging for this award will take place during the meeting.
Case Report Awards
The three best case reports submitted by residents of accredited US or Canadian Oral Medicine training programs will be selected to give a 15 minute oral case presentation at the AAOM meeting, and will receive a small monetary award. Judging will be based on the quality, clarity, and clinical significance of the abstract submission.
